I’m Ilana, a mixed-media artist based in New York, deeply influenced by my heritage and the elegance of calligraphy. My artistic journey, shaped by my upbringing, has become a passionate exploration of capturing moments in time, marking life’s essence, and evoking emotions through my work.
From a young age, I found joy in painting and sketching, drawing from the vibrancy of everyday scenes around me. As my craft evolved, I was drawn to the power of abstract expressionism, embracing its freedom to convey the complexities of human experience. This inspired me to create figures and portraits in a way that merges fluid lines and bold strokes with intricate patterns, reflecting my unique vision.
My signature style fuses the rigid, angular strokes of Kufic Arabic calligraphy with the geometric forms of ancient Phoenician writing. Every brushstroke is a deliberate dance between form and feeling, balancing emotion with structure. I’m particularly captivated by geometric shapes, often dreaming of a piece before it comes to life on canvas.
A central theme in my work is the exploration of psychological depth, human emotions, and the struggle for belonging. My series of portraits, especially dear to me, capture the raw emotions of my subjects, offering a glimpse into their inner worlds. Through these pieces, I invite viewers to immerse themselves in the moment, contemplating the profound layers of human existence.
Driven by a desire to share my perspective, my art allows you to see through my eyes and feel with my heart, offering a reflection of my inner world. It stands as a testament to my heritage and an invitation to explore the emotions and stories that connect us all.
